I hate to throw any 'dirt' on the Donnell Stadium project, but it seems the plans to install FieldTurf on the field has 'ground' to a halt ... at least for the time being.
Actually, the FieldTurf crew started installing the new sod last week. But they noticed a slight dip or depression in the sand and stone subsurface that would sit just under the sod and had to stop.
It looks like just a slight bump in the road, though.
Some say heavy rains last week caused an unexpected settling in some places, and that's why there were uneven spots. I've also heard that the field had not yet received its final certification (verifying its levelness, I guess) when the crew started putting sod down, and until that final word came down work could not proceed.
It's better to have found that out sooner, however, than later.
The field, as I understand it, has now gotten it final certification and is ready for the next step. Unfortunately, the crew that was working on the project moved on to its next job ... in Alaska. They won't be back, but another crew is on the way and -- hopefully -- will be in town Monday to resume the job. One the turf starts going in, I believe it takes 2-1/2 weeks to finish the job, including getting the lines and letters on the field. That's cutting it pretty close if Findlay wants to use the field for its first scrimmage on Aug. 17. With this project, though, I feel it's better to get it done right than to get it done fast.
