Lots of basketball games out there on a cold, snowy Tuesday night. We'll get them to you as soon as we can.
FINDLAY 68, TOLEDO SCOTT 53
By DAVE HANNEMAN
STAFF WRITER
When Kevin Krucki knocked down a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s game against Toledo Scott, it’s a good bet his Findlay High teammates immediately sat up and took notice.
“They say when I make one, it’s got to be going good for everyone,” Krucki said.
That may be the understatement of the season.
Krucki’s 3-pointer was part of a torrid long-range barrage that powered Findlay (8-4 overall) to a 68-53 win over Scott in a non-league matchup between the two schools. It was Findlay’s first win over a Scott (5-5) team since a 71-68 overtime victory in November of 1970.
Findlay connected on just 2-of-13 3-point shots through the first three quarters of a back-and-forth battle that was deadlocked 40-40 heading into the final period. But the Trojans nailed their first four “3s” of the fourth quarter, converted on five of their first six shots from beyond the arc and had six treys in the period.
“We had some open looks in the first half. We just didn’t make them,” said FHS Coach Jim Rucki. “In the fourth quarter, we hit a couple and got some confidence.
“When you shoot the ball well, it sure makes everything else look better.”
Garrett Bugay opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and, after Scott’s Owen Dotson was called or charging, Krucki nailed another.
“That was a nice inside-out play,” Rucki said. “We posted Luke (Kraus) up, and when they collapsed on him Kevin was wide open. He can make that shot, and after that it kind of snowballed.”
Following Krucki’s 3-pointer, Kraus scored on a nice back-door feed from Bugay, then knocked down a 3-pointer off a Matt Strzempka steal. That capped an 11-0 run that put Findlay up 51-40 and forced a frustrated Scott Coach Joe Suboticki to call a time out.
Dotson scored for Scott when play resumed. But Krucki converted on another back-door play and Kraus and Bugay hit 3-pointers during an 11-2 run that put the Trojans ahead 62-44 with 3:48 to play.
Kraus started slow, misfiring on his first four shots from the field and his first attempt from the line. But he heated up after that, scoring 9 points in the second quarter, 8 in the fourth and a career-high 30 for the game.
In the process, the 6-1 junior passed Chuck Rogers (756) and Will Toeppe (773) and moved into 13th place in Findlay High’s career scoring ranks with 784 pints.
Krucki, a 6-foot junior who plays inside against opponents four, five and six inches taller than he is, had a huge game with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Bugay hit three of his four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and had 13 points.
Dotson had 17 points and David Sweeney 14 for Toledo Scott. The Bulldogs were nearly unstoppable when they were able to get the ball inside to quick, physical players like Dotson, Sheron Allen (9 points, 9 rebounds) and Hakeem Greer. Those three were a combined 13 of 17 on their 2-point attempts, but they were also whistled for seven fouls in the first quarter.
That may have been the main reason why Suboticki, asked for a comment after the game, had just a one-word answer — “Referees” — as he continued down the hall at Findlay High.
“I would say something,” Suboticki added, “but I’d probably say something wrong.”
“They killed us inside,” Rucki said. “We knew they were strong and athletic, but it was too easy for them sometimes. People should have to work harder than that to score inside on you.”
Findlay will get little time to savor Tuesday’s win. The Trojans are back on the court Thursday when they host Marion Harding in a Greater Buckeye Conference contest. Marion Harding (3-10, 1-4) handed Findlay (4-1 GBC) its lone league loss, 47-43, on Dec. 6 of 2007.
“I told the guys it would be nice to have this win on a Saturday night when they could enjoy it,” Rucki said. “But we don’t have that luxury. This game is over. Now we have to get ready to play Thursday.”
In Tuesday’s opener, Toledo Scott overcame a 6-point deficit in the final four minutes to beat Findlay’s junior varsity 45-40. Clay Paul had 11 points and Brock Ammons 9 for Findlay (5-7). David McDonald led Scott with 15.

John, most people just want the scores. Thats why TV just scrolls the score across bottom and give details on big games.

Ken,
Their updates will be more than scores; they'll have the stats, though I wish they'd include the first names in the box scores (hint, hint from an old Courier fellow employee).
