Drerup torches Vanlue
By MARK HEIMAN
STAFF WRITER
VANLUE — Vanlue coach Jeff Kloepfer rues the day he decided to coach Jacob Drerup in summer basketball.
It’s because the Arlington senior torched Kloepfer and his Vanlue Wildcats Friday night.
Drerup dropped in a career-high 37 points, including three 3-pointers in a 51-second span early in the second quarter, as Arlington rolled to a 67-48 Blanchard Valley Conference win over Vanlue.
“I was in the zone I guess. It’s a good feeling and it really helped the team,” said Drerup, who also yanked down 9 rebounds. “After I made the first couple I just kept shooting it. I had a lot of good open looks.
“We set a lot of ball screens and (my teammates) found me.”
Arlington, which is 14-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference, trailed 14-6 after the first period. The Red Devils got buckets from Paden Morehart and Andrew Steinman to open the quarter.
Then it became Drerup time.
At the 6:02 mark he nailed his first 3-pointer. Thirty-seven seconds later, he swished a second and Kloepfer called time out. The time out didn’t matter as Drerup hit a third 24 seconds later. A Drerup steal and layup suddenly gave the Red Devils a 21-14 lead.
Vanlue’s Jordan Cook stopped the frenzy for a brief moment when he nailed his own 3-pointer. Drerup followed suit with his fourth trey in a 1:39 span. Less than a minute later, he hit another bomb, but his toe was on the line, to give Arlington a 26-19 lead.
“That was a pretty superb performance by Jacob. We didn’t have a great start. Vanlue’s intensity was much better than ours and we didn’t respond very well. Jacob decided enough was enough,” Arlington coach Jason Vermillion said.
“I haven’t seen anything like that since I’ve been coaching at our place.”
Drerup hit one more trey, he finished 5 of 7 behind the arc, and lived at the free-throw line in the second half. He hit 10 of 12 foul shots and 11 of 15 from the field.
“Drerup has really stepped up his game with (Damin) Oman and (Kevin) Rogers out,” Kloepfer said. “I’ve coached him a couple of summers and that’s the best I’ve seen him play. He wanted this game more than anybody.
“I thought coaching him in the summer I would have a feel for what he wants to do,” Kloepfer added with a laugh. “He flat out shot the ball and rebounded. He did everything.”
Vanlue’s defense dominated the first quarter of play as the Wildcats (14-4, 5-4) forced Arlington into an uncharacteristic 7 turnovers. But the defense seemed to lose confidence after Drerup starting raining in his ‘3s.’
“As soon as he hit the first one, I thought we panicked defensively. We never got back into it after that,” Kloepfer said.
“I preach helpside (defense), but it hurt us there. We had to stay out on Drerup.”
Vanlue had jumped out to its 14-6 lead after the first period, but could have extended the lead if not for missed layups and inside shots. The Wildcats ended up 18 of 57 (32 percent) from the field.
“I really think that these boys put too much pressure on themselves against big teams. They have a reputation that they can’t beat the good teams. I try to tell them to just play to have fun,” Kloepfer said.
“I told Josh (Kloepfer), ‘I like the way you are going to the basket strong, just keep doing it and they will fall.’”
Josh Kloepfer, who became Vanlue’s all-time leading scorer last Saturday and has 1,343 career points, led the Wildcats with 16 points and 8 rebounds, but he was just 4 of 16 from the field. Josh Kloepfer broke the scoring record of his uncle, John.
Vanlue’s Nick Lee had 15 points, while Andrew Steinman tossed in 12 points for Arlington.
“It’s a really big win for us,” Vermillion said. “It’s important to us to be above .500 in the league, because we want to be a competitive team in the tournament.”
As long as Drerup keeps raining in 3-pointers, the Red Devils have a good chance to do just that.
