Like the “Little Engine That Could,” Liberty-Benton found itself chugging uphill most of Saturday.
Akron Hoban had control of the ball most of the first half and then went into protection mode in handing the Eagles a 2-0 Division II regional final loss at Elmer Graham Memorial Field.
The victory puts Hoban (20-1-1) in the state semifinals for the third straight season, while Liberty-Benton, which was also knocked out of the regional by Hoban last year, finishes the year 20-1.
“We were kind of like the ‘Little School That Could’ at this point. We were the smallest school left in the state,” Liberty-Benton coach David LaRocco said.
“It’s disappointing, but we are not going to hang our heads. It’s a good learning experience. We can take things from this. The girls need to hit the weight room and play in the spring and summer."
