COLUMBUS – It was Jaunna Gase’s first trip to the state track and field meet Friday at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“Amazing!” Gase, of Fostoria St. Wendelin, responded after being asked about the experience. “It is so big and there are so many people.”
All of those people had just seen Gase crawl down off the awards stand after picking up seventh place in the Division III girls field events.
Gase picked up her placing by leaping 16-feet-6 just a quarter inch behind Creston Norwayne’s Destinee Studer.
“I (think) I would have done better if I had not fouled the last two jumps. They were out there pretty good,” said Gase.
Earlier in the day, the sophomore had finished fifth in both hurdles events, just missing qualifying for Saturday’s finals.
“It’s crazy fast here,” Gase said. “I tried to prepare myself.
“I’m happy with what I got, because I have two more years to come down here.”
Gase was the only area girl to place in the field events.
McComb’s Jackie Leppelmeier just missed a spot on the stands as she placed ninth with a toss of 37-2.
