The photo shows Dave, the head of this crew, in the first phase laying the surface. He is rolling the sand/stone sub-base one final time as this is the last it will be "uncovered." He does this in 15-foot increments to stay just ahead of the surface. You can see on the right, a section of the surface laying upside down.
Previous field installations at Donnell did not have the crown so noticeable on football fields. This installation DOES have a crown and is crowned from the center out at a rate of 1/8-inch drop per foot headed to the sidelines.
The crew installing the turf at Donnell is laying their fourth field of the summer, and their 15th since January 1st. They are the same crew that laid the turf at Ohio Stadium.
There are three crews that will do the complete installation:
The crew laying down the turf will be installing it on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Upon completion, this crew will head out to their next job (which just happens to be in Anchorage, Alaska). The next second crew will come in and inlay the numbers and letters in the end zone. A third crew after that will come in to install the rubber/sand mixture.
Installation is a relatively "simple" process, utilizing the following steps with the crew:
Rolling the "sand" sub-base
Rolling out the carpet (upside down)
Trimming the edge to prepare it for sewing
Sewing the seams
Flipping the turf right side up it & stretching it
Rolling it
The turf is stored and shipped just like rolls of carpet.
