Going Up...Going Down - 11/30/07

Farewell to November - it was truly an exciting month! Before we leave, let's see who is up/down..

Tony Iriti
Coming off the victories of RiverPlace and port authority (securing a legacy), one would hope that the mayor would be doing everything in his power to help make the transition to Pete Sehnert an easy one for the sake of the city. He still has a month left in office, I hope he decides to stay on the high road and leave office in style; the last impression is often the one that the community remembers.
Pete Sehnert
You think that Mayor Iriti not being helpful is an issue? Wait until you face your own 'RiverPlace'-type issue and then see what type of response you receive the community-at-large. Even if you are not receiving cooperation, rise above it and just do your best. Complaining about it in the news does not endear you to the community; it makes you seem like a whiner. You have a month until taking office - don't ruin your political reputation before you begin your new job.
CNN
Whether you believe or not that the questions the Cable News Network selected, or their methodology, were above board, one thing does not change. No matter who the person was asking the question - or whether they support someone else - candidates have to answer difficult questions (even if quite a few were irrelevent). If CNN would have truly not used a question or two if they knew more about who submitted them, then shame on them for not vetting the individuals fully.
Hillary Clinton
Planted questions...Obama catching (or passing her) in Iowa...polls showing Republicans would beat her head-to-head...receiving Streisand's endorsement...and now the hostage situation in Rochester. When you are in front, people find more faults because they are looking harder. But no matter how you look at it, this has not been a good week for her PR department.
Mike Huckabee
Just the opposite, it seems like the former governor of Arkansas can do little wrong these days. He is tied with or ahead of everyone in Iowa...he is surging in New Hampshire and South Carolina...almost every story I read/watched had him winning the YouTube debate...and Chuck Norris endoresed him. Despite the first attack ad of the season directed at him (and Romney - from Thompson), this has been a good week for his PR department.span>

Latest Numbers - Republicans

If you weren't watching the CNN/YouTube debate this evening, it was really interesting (and entertaining). The audience was really into it - reacting to every candidate response. I was at work when this started so I decided not to start live-blogging part of the way through, but if you get the opportunity to watch a replay or see the answers on YouTube, please do so.

As for the Republican numbers, here they are (check out the new leader in Iowa)...

Thanksgiving Tradition

One of the best known traditions in Washington is the annual pardoning of the White House turkey. At this time of the year, the President grants an unconditional release to a representative of this poultry family, and the bird moves on to live a life of luxury (usually in a petting zoo). Here is the story of this year's pardoning of May and Flower by President Bush:

Truman "This year marks the 60th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation. Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented intermittently to presidents since the Lincoln administration, the current ceremony dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was presented to President Harry Truman.

The presentation at times has brushed against broader history. For example, the November 1963 event was one of President Kennedy's last in the Rose Garden. The first President Bush conducted the 1990 ceremony just before leaving for Thanksgiving with the troops in the Persian Gulf region. President Clinton in 1996 returned from an Asian summit and literally went directly to the ceremony.

The 2007 National Thanksgiving Turkey and its alternate are from Dubois, Indiana and were raised under the direction of National Turkey Federation Chairman Ted Seger. The 21-week old turkey, will weigh about 45 pounds, when he is driven to Washington.
Bush
The National Thanksgiving Turkey was raised using normal feeding and other production techniques. The one exception is they were provided increased interaction with people so that they would be prepared for their role at the White House Ceremony.

Presidents traditionally have granted the National Thanksgiving Turkey a "pardon". After the presentation, the turkey will be flown first class to Disney World in Orlando, where he will be the grand marshal of “Disney’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” After the parade, guests will be able to visit the bird in the backyard of Mickey’s Country House in Magic Kingdom Park."

For more information, visit the official White House website.

How did this tradition begin?

Doing a little research, there is a story going around that Abraham Lincoln was the first to do this, albeit not in the traditional manner we have come to know:

RiverPlace Council Vote

Well, what did you think?

I sat here and watched the entire city council meeting, and just a few observations:

  • It was interesting that 2 of the 3 speakers in favor of RiverPlace were from outside Findlay. I like to think big, but Indianapolis (population: 785,597) and Fort Wayne (population: 223,341) are hardly comparable to our community or what we can accomplish and support.
  • I would have been more comfortable with Lynn Child's comments if we knew who she was exactly speaking for. Was she speaking for GFI, the board of trustees of The University of Findlay or the Findlay Downtown Area Association? Just curious.
  • Sharinda Welton came back with more signatures; I guess there were actually people who weren't happy with this project.
  • There was more discussion from council members AFTER the vote, then took place before. It may have been procedural and not appropriate to bring up when debating legislation, but it seemed like everyone who spoke were trying to put this behind them.
  • The 'duh' statement(s) of the night were uttered by one of the public speakers and Ron Monday - paraphrasing, "I already know how city council is going to vote on this tonight".  Uh, really?!?
  • The only thing I had a problem with was the lecture the community received from Tony Iriti at the end of the evening. It may have been the volume of the microphone, but it sure sounded like he had a tone to his voice, and the words coming out reminded me of someone who was tired of being questioned.

Here is how city council voted (7 in favor, 2 against), and their addresses/phone numbers if you would like to communicate your support or concerns:

No matter your opinions leading up to tonight's vote, it is now over. If things did not go your way, it does no one any good to hold any sort of resentment or be upset with the results. We will know eventually whether this was a good or poor idea, and everyone is free to make comments along the way. If you feel that council members acted appropriately, keep them in office; if you think they made the wrong decision, keep that in mind in May and November of 2009.

Maybe there are some community members who feel strongly enough about what is going on to run for office in the future (I would like to see a lot more people from across the political spectrum on the ballot). The important thing is that this city comes together and we support each other as we move forward. As always, your comments about this evening and how we move on are welcome and appreciated, by myself and others.

Presidential Endorsements IV

Hill21 Sheet Metal Workers International Association (joining with the United Transportation Union) endorses HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

The Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association today added our voices to those of our union brothers and sisters in the United Transportation Union (UTU) in making a SMART choice by announcing our joint support for Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next President of the United States.

More than 500 SMART members and their families clad in  golden ‘Hillary 2008’ t-shirts gathered at the SMWIA Local 88  union hall to show their rousing support of the endorsement.

Smwia_logo According to General President Michael J. Sullivan:

"The SMART union candidate, Senator Hillary Clinton, knows that all working Americans and their families want new leadership and new thinking on both the domestic and international fronts.  She will bring to this high office the intelligence and common sense necessary to guide our nation to its destiny as a strong and compassionate society.

Hillary Clinton understands our issues.  She knows the importance of sound policies and programs and will deal fairly and intelligently in addressing the energy crisis, fair trade, affordable health care, funding college and technical education and training, and will protect retirement security."

Thanks

With Veterans Day being observed this weekend, I thought I would share a small tale with you. I saw a posting at work yesterday that piqued my interest.

Letter

I immediately copied the information and brought it home. This is a great sentiment and one that I was going to encourage you to also participate in. I got on-line to see if there any other local or national organizations doing this...and I came across an issue.

There is a website (Snopes.com) that casts light upon urban legends, rumors and weird news. Even though this does not necessarily fall into those categories, the site is useful to find out how accurate general solicitations are, and what you should really know.

It turns out that if you send a letter to 'A Recovering American Soldier', the mail will be discarded because of security concerns. There has been so much interest in sending letters,
Walter Reed issued a press release last Thursday to let the public know what to do (a portion appears below)

Wr

So, what can we do? According to Walter Reed and other websites I found, there are a plethora of organizations that can be contacted, including (but certainly not limited to)

If you come across additional sites, please add them to the comments section and we will revisit this posting a few more times during the holidays.

There are plenty of men and women out there who have risked their lives (and currently doing so) for us and our country. No matter your political leanings when it comes to the war in Iraq or this administration, I hope everyone agrees that it is important to support all the troops (past and present) through the year and convey how much you appreciate the sacrifices they and their families have made (and continue to make).

One of my friends,
Brad Salisbury, is a veteran (Marine Corps). We were both in a meeting this afternoon, and when it was over, I took a moment to thank him for serving our country and even gave him a hug. It may not seem like much, but we might be better off if everyone took a moment and did that for a veteran that we know. To Brad and the rest of you who have served this great country, all I can say is a simple THANK YOU!!

Going Up...Going Down - 11/09/07

It's been a few weeks, but like a faithful friend, GUGD is back.

National Presidential Straw poll participants
The group that got together tonight was small, but we discussed many serious issues. It was very encouraging to see people from different walks of life come together to share their opinions, and have an intelligent discussion about the things important to us and the Presidential candidates in the next position to tackle them. Even though there were a few differences of opinion, everyone was respectful, asked questions and listened...what a concept in this era of bitter, partisan politics. Coming out on a Friday night...to talk politics...right after an election (when people are usually tired of the subject; I cannot give enough credit to those who attended! I have never been part of a straw poll/caucus before, but after this experience I am looking forward to December.
The answer: 71.41
The question: The percentage of Hancock County registered voters, who didn't.
Pete Sehnert
Since Findlay is a Republican town, his election was expected. Despite the victory, there are still plenty of skeptics about whether he is up to doing the job. With less than two months to go before he takes office, he needs to get his team in place and start planning. He may not be in a position to do anything about River Place or a port authority, but other issues are on deck and awaiting his leadership...and while he's at it, maybe keep the ball rolling on flooding.
Latta-Buehrer I
As bitter and mean-spirited as this thing got, don't believe that this thing is over. Latta may have won the battle, but the war is going to continue. There is a primary election right around the corner, and whether Latta defeats Robin Weirauch or not in December, these two gentlemen (even though they don't deserve that title) will be back at it in short order.
The Tip
Did she, or didn't she? Clinton's campaign said they left a $100 tip after a visit to a Toledo, Iowa restaurant. One of the waitresses said she never saw anyone from the campaign leave one. I'm not taking sides on the issue; I just can't believe that the media jumped on this and made it a huge story within hours. With all the other important, and nonsensical, issues that candidates deal with, is this really worthy of the column space and airtime it has taken? Just say no!

For Mayor of Findlay, FCPolitico endorses...

When I started this blog in May, I knew that tonight was coming. And let me be totally honest with you...for the past several months, I have not been looking forward to this moment. Since the mayoral forum, people have (jokingly) been asking me who I was going to vote for, and the answer has always been the same - honestly, I didn't know. Friends of mine, as well as the FCPolitiGal, have suggested that I just explain to everyone the situation I am in, and not make a recommendation for mayor (especially since the holidays are coming up, and family gatherings might be a little strained if I make the wrong decision).

For Findlay City Council, FCPolitico endorses...

Flooding, Towne Center, Port Authority, Sidewalks, Building Code...there are quite a few issues that city council needs to deal with over the next two years. It is always important to have the right mix of individuals in order to be effective when working toward solutions, and with a new administration coming in, city council will be relied on more than ever to provide leadership, guidance and support. For city council, I am only covering races that are being contested.
