If you glance at his picture too quickly, you would swear that Richard Cordray was a twin to Kenneth on "30 Rock". Despite his youthful appearance, Cordray (who is 49) is the best choice to become Ohio's next attorney general.
As Ohio's treasurer, and one of the the new generation of Democrats that took office in 2006, Cordray has already earned the public's trust once, and there is no reason to believe that he could not bring honor back to the position that was stained by former AG Marc Dann.
It is impressive that Cordray is endorsed by a great cross-section of our state's media, including
- Columbus Dispatch "Crites is a worthy public servant, but cannot better Cordray's resume and long record of integrity and competence."
- Cincinnati Enquirer "Seldom have we seen a race in which the two contenders are both as highly qualified and capable, which makes an endorsement an extremely tough call. Our nod goes to Cordray by the slimmest of margins, but we believe Ohio would be very ably served by Crites as well. It's a shame one of them has to lose."
- Cleveland Plain Dealer "It's a close call, but we give the edge to Cordray, based on his formidable knowledge of state government -- and the hope that he will stay in the job long enough to make a difference."
- Dayton Daily News "Mr. Cordray is seasoned, able and devoted to serving in public and political office for the right reasons. He is the superior choice."
- Akron Beacon Journal "Pull together all of Cordray's strengths, including his many campaigns and his time in private practice arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court, and you have a most promising candidate for attorney general, one suited for what the job actually requires."
- Toledo Blade "The time has now come for voters to make that choice and The Blade believes that Democrat Richard Cordray, the current state treasurer, has the breadth of experience necessary to complete the job Mrs. Rogers has so ably begun."
I like the fact that Cordray has served as treasurer, a state representative and state solicitor. This breadth of experience gives him a unique background, one that will benefit him (and us) as he advises our state government.
He does not come across as a career lawyer or politician; the only apparent drawback is that his political ambition might have him looking to run for another job instead of fully investing himself into this position.
However, if Cordray is as good as advertised, this is a chance I am willing to take. For Ohio Attorney General, FCPolitico endorses Richard Cordray.
