If I have done my research correctly, and please correct me if I am wrong, you need to go back to the 1930's to find a U.S. Senator with ties to Northwest Ohio.
Simeon Davison Fess was born near Harrod (Allen County), went to Ohio Northern and later worked at the school. Fess was a Senator from 1923-1935, rising to the rank of majority whip, and also serving as chair of the Republican National Committee in 1931. While in the Senate, Fess briefly served with Cyrus Locher. Locher, a Democrat, was born in Putnam County, went to Ohio Wesleyan and served as Ohio director of commerce before being appointed to the Senate in 1928.
Why the brief history lesson? Well, with George Voinovich announcing that he is going to retire and not run in 2010, potential candidates are starting to position themselves and lining up support. This will be an interesting election with several good candidates from the major parties rumored to be running. What is interesting is the possibility of having this representative be from, and intimate with, the people and issues of our area.
With Rob Portman announcing today that he is running for the Republican nomination, this may be a short fight. He could be such a strong candidate that no one else will challenge him. Besides former Senator Mike DeWine and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell (who is currently running for chair of the RNC), no other Republican has the name recognition or credentials of Portman.
According to WFIN, however, Jim Jordan is thinking about running. A quick snapshot of the background and experience of Jordan and Portman shows what our area representative would be up against
Quite a bit can happen over the next 16 months, but until the 2010 primary, I imagine that we'll see nominees from both parties emerge long before that so that the attacks campaigning can start.

AP Slammed Bush’s ‘Extravagant’ Inaugural in ’05, But Now It’s Spend, Baby, Spend
Four years ago, the Associated Press and others in the press suggested it was in poor taste for Republicans to spend $40 million on President Bush’s inauguration. AP writer Will Lester calculated the impact that kind of money would have on armoring Humvees in Iraq, helping victims of the tsunami, or paying down the deficit. >>

It's amazing what Portman's trip to NW Ohio can do...knock someone out of the race. Portman was in Toledo yesterday, and Jordan decides the time isn't right. Coincidence? Who knows - just interesting timing.

If i was able to vote, I would vote for Portman. I really do not know much about politic but by the comparison between Jordan and Portman, Portman seems more experience. I agree it would be great if the citizens of Northwestern Ohio had a Senator who knows what is going on in Northwestern Ohio. Knowing he is a big competition tells me that he is a great person to support in the election. If people know they do not have a high chance of beating him in the election it shows how good he is.

I think that portman is a better canadiate because of the experience. I mean if portman has been in the political buisness since 1989 and jordan since 1994 then portman obviously has 5 more years of experience then does jordan. experience doesnt always make the deciding factor. If you look at the presidental election you can see obviously that McCain had way more experience but he didnt win because Obama was the better canadiate. This is the same thing if Jordan is the better canadiate then he deserves to win over Portmans experience.
