On our May 2007 vacation, my family was surrounded with abundance. Veterans, tourists, monuments, flags, temperature degrees ... we experienced a lot of everything, everywhere.
We traveled to Rockville, Maryland for Memorial Day weekend and visited Washington, D.C. for the holiday celebrations.
This year was the 20th anniversary of Rolling Thunder, a group of military veterans who ride motorcycles in honor of their fallen comrades and in remembrance of soldiers who are still POWs. For this milestone there was an estimated 300,000 motorcycles on the streets on D.C. for this parade, which lasted hours.
D.C. sure has changed a lot since I was last there, with the Vietnam Memorial and the World War II Memorial being new attractions for me. You could spend a week in Washington, D.C. experiencing all that our nation's capital has to offer. If you don't like looking at monuments for past presidents and wars, you can take in the art exhibits all over downtown. The Corcoran Museum of Art was featuring a Modernism exhibit with artistic furniture pieces and paintings when we where there.
Washington is well worth the trip and is an educational experience that I think any family would enjoy. You don't necessarily have to go during Memorial Day, but if you are a motorcycle enthusiast, this holiday weekend is like having another birthday bash, complete with custom bikes and amazing paint jobs.
