Some believe drawing is a "God-given" talent reserved for the "special" few (others believe a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe, see http://www.venganza.org/). Neither of these beliefs is true. Anyone can learn to express themselves through art. Learning how to draw takes time, practice, repetition and making lots of mistakes. People fail to recognize the process because they only see beginner pieces (where everything's a mess) or highly polished, professional pieces (where everything looks great). You miss the journey every "artist" takes from total hack to partial hack to -- at least in my case -- semi-skilled hack. This gallery illustrates my #2 pencil journey from know-nothing scrawler without any art training (January 2007) to the current know-nothing scrawler who has read one "how-to" book (Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards), taken two classes and destroyed untold pencils, papers and erasers. You can view the journey by starting with the first drawing and moving forward through the gallery. Or, if you want to see what's new, go to the bottom of this page and click on the arrows to get to the last page/image and go backwards from there. Comments on the gallery -- gratuitous and other -- can be sent to the scrawler at jbado@aol.com. This gallery features comic book sketches only.
